We had a pretty hectic weekend.
I ran out of work at 4:30 to meet J at the kennel where we board the pups for check-in (I like to call the place "doggie sleepaway camp" since it sounds less unpleasant for all). We both really like the place. It's where Lucy goes for doggie daycare a few times a week, it's located in a large veterinary facility, they get daycare during the day and they are allowed to share a large kennel at night, and the staff are so good with the dogs. We hate ever having to board them, but when we don't have a choice, this place puts our minds at ease. The boys were doing a two day stay without their little bossy long-eared sister, who was accompanying us to Connecticut for an early Christmas celebration with my family. Three is too many to take with us when we invade my parents' house, an boarding two was a little more economical, especially considering we had another three day boarding of all three pups coming up in a week for New Years. Yikes.
We stopped home to pack up the car and grab a quick bite to eat before hitting the road via a detour to East Providence for the wedding of a couple of friends. It was a lovely - very warm and simple, wedding at their home with a smallish group of family and friends. We visited for a little bit, attended the ceremony, and then said our goodbyes only a short time later. We still had to make a couple stops on the way to CT and it was getting late.
A quick stop at Target for a couple things we forgot to get earlier and a coffee and we were on the road with a great playlist of holiday songs J put together for the drive. I called my parents to let them know we were running late and it was looking like a midnight arrival. They assured us it was no problem, just to let ourselves in and we'd see them in the morning. We talked and sang along to the songs and had a fun little (unusually traffic free) journey to our homestate.
As we approached New Haven we encountered our usual quandry of whether or not to stop at Mamoun's. Neither of us had eaten much during the day and we were making pretty good time. It's become a tradition to stop in on our way in or out of town, or both, each time we visit. Not willing to tamper with tradition, we decided to make a quick stop for a no meat combo plate and a mango iced tea between us.
Man, that place never disappoints.
We got to my parents' around midnight, made our way through the recently rebuilt downstairs (they had a bit of a flood downstairs a few months ago), and cozied up in our room with miss Lucy stationed at the foot of the bed (she lives for security detail).
We woke the next morning to the sound of someone hacking their lungs out upstairs. I went up to say good morning and discovered my mother had what sounded like bronchitis, though she insisted it was nothing and she was on antibiotics that were making things better.
I took a shower and got ready for the day and tried to help with the cooking and baking as much as possible (my mom has this down to a science and any help has to follow strict guidelines. Mainly, you don't do anything unless she askes you to). My form of help usually involves hanging out in the kitchen and visiting with her as she swirls around the room pulling copius amounts of taasty food out of the oven in a way that often reminds me of the hundred clown emerging from a tiny clown car.
My brother and sister-in-law came by around 1 and my uncle wasn't too far behind them. We talked and caught up with everyone for a while and then sat down to a fabulous and typically early holiday dinner. Afterwards, we exchanged gifts and then visited with everyone a bit more. Everyone left around 7 and we were exhausted. Though we'd toyed with the idea of heading into New Haven for a little while, all we wanted was to relax for a little while and go to bed early.
After visiting with my parents for a little while Sunday morning, we were packing up and heading home to get the boys at doggie sleepaway camp. We made one more stop at Mamoun's, because we have a habit to tend to, purchased a bottle of hotsauce and split our usual order before racing back to get to Warwick before the kennel closed at 3.
We got everyone home, we unpacked the car and played with the pups for a bit before heading out seperately to do some final touches on the Christmas shopping and making sure we were properly stocked for the Christmas evening get-together/open house/sit-by-the-fire-and-drink-cocktails party.
By the time we both got home it was getting late but my excitment at the prospect of having a birthdayxmaseve/christmas/dayafter all home with J and the pups, no running around, no work, no stress, is almost too much. I am looking forward to spending 3 wonderful days with my four loves (and hopefully even with a little snow, too, if the weatherman isn't fibbing). That's the best part of the whole holiday thing, spending time with loved ones, devoid of stress or craziness. I have big (but very simple) dreams for this.
Hopefully that doesn't mean I'm instantly jinxed.
